Current events happening in the UK and further afield have left people feeling pretty surreal. The coronavirus outbreak has meant for the majority of us, our day to day lives have now been put on hold.

Earlier this week, Boris Johnson announced that the UK is now in lockdown, meaning unless you have a valid reason which the government has outlined, you have to remain within the constraints of your own home.

The effects of coronavirus have inevitably left people feeling anxious and worried. Holidays have been cancelled, thousands of venues across the country have closed their doors and everyday activities we take for granted, are on hold for the foreseeable future.

Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle Whilst In Lockdown

With gyms and leisure centres no longer accessible, it has had a huge impact on those who like to workout and keep fit, or for those who see exercise as a form of therapy. Whilst the UK is in lockdown, this doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a good level of health; even if it isn’t to your normal standard.

Being confined to your own home can cause a sense of anxiety for many people, which is why it’s important to prioritise your physical and mental health during this period. Many people see exercise as a coping mechanism for their personal battles or a way to de-stress. With this in mind and with so much uncertainty surrounding the current situation, maintaining a healthy body and mind is essential.

With a period of lockdown now underway, I wanted to share a few ways in which you can maintain a healthy lifestyle, without the use of a gym.

Utilise your period of exercise

Although the UK population has to spend the majority of their time indoors, the government announced each person is allowed to leave the house once a day to exercise. It’s really important that you make the most of this, especially when the weather is in your favour.

Whether it’s on your own or with other members of your household, enjoy a walk, bike ride or run and make the most of the outdoors and fresh air. Leaving your home for the time you’re allowed will inevitably enhance your physical and mental health.

Keep up the healthy eating

As many of us have been completely thrown off of our normal routines, it’s more than likely your regular healthy eating habits will take a hit. Just because we’re currently facing an uncertain time ahead and you’ve had to alter your exercise routines; doesn’t mean you can’t eat a balanced diet.

For many people, eating junk food often makes them feel down about themselves, which is the last thing you want right now. Make sure before you do your weekly shop, you create a meal plan consisting of balanced meals. Don’t forget to treat yourself to the occasional sweet treat!

I’m sure I’m right in saying that we’re all feeling a bit anxious because of what’s going on in the world right now. As a nation, we need to all do our bit to bring this uncertain period to an end as soon as possible.

Whether it’s by creating a home gym, meditating or going on a daily run, it’s really important that during this time you prioritise your physical and mental health. Keeping a healthy lifestyle and positive mindset, will enable us to make the most of our time whilst our daily routines are put on hold.
